Why Are There So Many Dandelions in NE Wisconsin This Year?
If you've noticed your lawn — or your neighbor’s — covered in bright yellow dandelions this spring, you're not alone. Homeowners all across Northeast Wisconsin are seeing more dandelions than usual this year, and many are wondering: why the sudden explosion?
As a local lawn care professional, I want to break it down and explain what’s going on.
1. A Mild Winter and Early Spring
This past winter was milder than usual, with fewer deep freezes and an earlier thaw. That’s great news for dandelions. These tough perennials store energy in their taproots and can survive harsh conditions, but when the ground warms up early, they get a jumpstart on growth. It may be a chilly spring overall, but we unfortunately experienced that very warm week right when all the rain got dumped on us. Which leads us to point number two...
2. Perfect Growing Conditions
Dandelions thrive in cool, moist weather — exactly what we’ve had this spring. Several rains, mixed with that warmer-than-average week, created the perfect storm for germination and growth. They grow quickly, flower fast, and spread even faster with just a little wind.
3. Weakened Lawns
A strong, healthy lawn is your best defense against weeds. But lawns stressed from last year’s drought or compacted from snow and ice damage may not be thick enough this spring to compete. Dandelions are opportunists — if there’s bare soil or thin turf, they’ll find a way in.
4. Natural Life Cycle
Finally, it’s worth remembering that dandelions are part of a natural cycle. Some years they show up more heavily than others due to weather patterns, pollinator trends, and soil conditions. This year just happens to be one where everything aligned in their favor.
What Can You Do About It?
If your lawn is covered in dandelions, don’t worry — it’s not too late to take action.
Mow high and often — cutting your grass too short weakens it and helps weeds like dandelions thrive.
Consider aeration and overseeding this fall to help thicken up weak spots and crowd out future weed growth.
